What is a Pre-Dentistry Program?

The Pre-Dentistry Program

Drury University offers students an early acceptance to Missouri medical schools. Students that wish to enroll in a dental school must pass the Dental Admission Test (DAT). DAT is a comprehensive exam testing general chemistry, biology, and organic chemistry. The exam also tests your general academic aptness, comprehension of scientific information, and perception ability. DAT (Dental Admissions Test) is necessary for Dental School Admission. The American Dental Association (ADA) conducts the exam as a requirement for applying to graduate school, in addition to admission essays, a personal interview, and an undergraduate GPA and coursework.

Medical School Early Acceptance Program

Pre-Med & Pre-Health Sciences at Drury offers the Pre-Dentistry Program that prepares you for a dentist degree. The test takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes that includes comprehensive multiple questions consisting of biology and chemistry topics:

  • Perceptual Ability, 90 items
  • A Survey of Natural Sciences, 100 items
  • The Reading Comprehension, 50 items
  • Quantitative Reasoning, 40 items

Pre-Dentistry Program Exam

To become a dentist, you have to pass the DAT exams. Pre-med school DAT scores range from 1 to 30 with no passing or failing score. However, a standard score of 15 translates to an average performance on a national basis.

Drury University recommends that applicants take DAT exams the year prior to enrollment with at least one year of collegiate education; either a major in biology or a major in chemistry (general and organic chemistry). These exams will adequately prepare you for a graduate program in dentistry.

Pre-dentistry colleges use standard rather than raw scores to rate your performance relative to the performance of all other applicants. Two average scores rate this performance; they include the Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) average, and the academic average.

Having a letter of recommendation and passing the dental school interview can help you make up for the average score and may potentially boost your scores.

How long is Dental School?

Dentists help to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. To become a dentist, candidates must pass the DAT exams, after which they enroll and graduate from a four-year dentistry school. Drury University students need to spend as much time in the clinic as they do in the lecture rooms.

Internships and Clinical Experience

To become a good dentist, you need to spend ample time in a clinical setting for an in-depth understanding of the dental profession. During the clinical internship, the applicant gets first-hand knowledge of the profession.

Drury University students interact with the local alumni, which they can gain experience over time. They can also access internship opportunities through the Office of Career Planning and Development.
