SPRINGFIELD, Mo., August 25, 2022 — The excitement on campus is palpable during Drury University’s sorority recruitment. But, unlike many other colleges around the country gaining attention for their extravagance, Drury sororities follow a values-based recruitment model, emphasizing a “no-frills” approach.
“You could think about a big school where they do big balloon arches and decorate the outside of their houses. We don’t do that here; we keep decorations and things very minimal,” said Anna Stark director of Greek life. “Our recruitment is focused on authenticity and the actual experience of being a sorority woman here at Drury; that is how our chapters operate and what we make sure our potential new members take away from the experience.”
Drury sororities focus on values such as community service, integrity, unselfish leadership and responsible citizenship. As potential new members go through the recruitment process, they are guided by recruitment councilors trained to help identify which sorority may be the best fit.
“During this time, conversations with potential members are the focus,” said Abby Robertson, Drury junior and vice president of administration for Panhellenic Council, Drury’s governing body for sororities. “We place emphasis on values rather than what a person looks like, their background, or similarities they may have with preexisting members. These conversations are so crucial because you get to learn about each other in a nonsuperficial way.”
Drury freshman, Abbey Oliver is gearing up to go through sorority recruitment. She says Drury’s methods make sorority life more accessible and encourages women, like her, to step out of their comfort zone.
“I’m a pretty shy and quiet person and I feel like without all the glam and glitter, it’s more welcoming and I can be more comfortable in that environment,” Abbey said.
Recruitment kicks off tonight, Aug. 25, with an informational session. Potential new members will meet with each sorority the following Friday and Saturday and sorority chapter assignments will be released Sunday.
