Springfield, MO, August 22, 2023 – This year, Drury University relaunched its community Service Plunge after a years-long pandemic hiatus. The event was held on Monday, August 21 and 366 incoming freshmen and transfer students volunteered around the community at six different locations:
At the cleanups along Fassnight and Jordan Creek 209 students & faculty collected 87 bags of trash and assorted large debris from the streams and the surrounding flood plain.
At Convoy of Hope, World Distribution Center, volunteers counted, sorted and boxed a variety of products including groceries and hygiene kits. At the Center for Agriculture and Food Security, volunteers served in the high tunnels and the garden.
“Service Plunge is an integral part of our university’s identity, highlighting our dedication to both education and community involvement,” said Executive Vice President and Provost, Beth Harville. “We are thrilled to be able to reintroduce this event as part of our 150th anniversary and continue the tradition of fostering a strong connection between our students and the Springfield community.”
The Service Plunge not only provides a platform for students to give back but also encourages lasting relationships between the university and surrounding community organizations. Through hands-on volunteering experiences, students gain valuable insights, develop teamwork skills and create memories that last a lifetime.
