Drury announces new Master in Public Service and Safety Leadership

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., May 18, 2020 — Drury University announces the Master in Public Service and Safety Leadership, launching in fall 2020. The new multi-disciplinary program focuses on developing the leadership skills necessary to successfully integrate all aspects of public safety, operations, personnel management, and strategic practices and policies.

The 30-credit hour (10 course) program is available entirely online and builds on Drury’s highly respected two- and four-year undergraduate degrees in Emergency Management.

Drury professors and administrators crafted the new curriculum in direct consultation with experts from multiple public service/safety backgrounds in the Ozarks and around the country. Many of those same experts will teach in the program.

This degree is designed to support mid- and senior-level leaders in emergency management and related fields like public health, emergency medical services and public administration. It also is useful for military service members and those planning to transition into civilian service.

“We are seeing now, more than ever, the need for leaders in emergency management to have an integrated approach to public service and safety rather than operating in individual silos,” says Dr. Lori Slater, Director Drury Leadership Collaborative. “This degree program was carefully crafted to ensure individuals the diverse knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish this.”

Additional features of the program include:

  • Credit for qualifying professional development courses (up to six credit hours)
  • Up to nine credit hours of transfer credit for military education/training
  • No GRE required to apply and no thesis required to graduate
  • Concurrent Credit options with the Emergency Management bachelor’s degree

Certificate Option Available

A 12-hour graduate certificate in Public Safety Leadership is also available. The certificate includes four courses are the core of the new degree program, covering areas such as strategic planning, human resource management and project management. Students can earn the certificate in as little as nine months and then go on to earn the full master’s degree if they choose.

Scholarship Opportunity

A $500 scholarship is available for up to 15 new students who are admitted to the program by July 15, and who are degree seeking (not applicable for certificate-only admissions). The student must be registered for at least six semester hours at the time scholarship is applied, and it is renewable for a second academic year if the student maintains 3.0 or higher GPA and completes a minimum of 12 credit hours the first year.

Growing Graduate Programs

Drury’s graduate degree programs are on the rise as options expand and new curriculums are being developed with input from leaders in private industry and subject matter experts. The Public Service and Safety Leadership certificate is one of six certificates that will be available starting in the fall that students can use as building blocks for new, customizable Master of Integrative Leadership degree.

The recently announced MBA Ventures program is a new take on the business master’s degree. And Drury’s existing master’s degree programs in Nonprofit and Civic LeadershipEducation and Communication continue to attract, challenge and shape the next generation of leaders in these high-demand fields.
