SPRINGFIELD, Mo., March 4, 2020 — Drury University’s Pool Art Center Gallery will host an exhibit of the works of Todd Lowery during the month of March. The show, titled “Boundaries| Blocks | Borders,” opens with an artist’s reception from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday March 5.

“Boundaries | Blocks | Borders” features recent pieces by Lowery, a longtime professor of art at Drury whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. The works include paintings and a large-scale installation based on urban locales in the Mediterranean.

The majority of the pieces are the result of “Contested Urbanscapes,” a Swedish-funded fieldwork research project investigating art, creative commons, and urban spaces in sites of past and present conflict of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The oil and watercolor paintings are abstractions that recreate spatial, formal, and temporal qualities and sensations connected to sites in Lebanon, Israel, and Cyprus. The installation makes use of approaches found in street art, such as stenciling and spray painting, to address conflict, division, and attempts of reconciliation in Beirut, Jerusalem and Nicosia.

Lowery received his MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York with an emphasis in painting and installation art. He works in a variety of media, primarily painting and drawing, as well as installation, sculpture, and photography. His public art includes “The Sounds of Springfield,” a mural designed and painted as part of the downtown Springfield mural project.

The show runs through March 26. Viewing hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and until 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
