Drury University’s annual Vespers service reaches new audience in video format

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., December 8, 2020 — A Christmas tradition at Drury University is reaching a broader audience in this pandemic year thanks to a new format.

For more than six decades, the annual Vespers service held in early December has marked the beginning of the Christmas season for many. Vespers is based on the traditional lessons and carols service and includes classic carols, as well as more contemporary choral works.

As with many live events in 2020, the university wasn’t able to hold the event in-person. However, the university has just released a video version of the service, produced in a manner that was safe for the student singers.

All of the audio of students singing was recorded during rehearsals with the singers masked, socially distanced, and adhering to strict safety guidelines. There was no live singing during the filming, though the effect for the viewer is the same as if they were in the room. The Drury Singers and Drury Chamber Ensemble are the featured groups. Drury video instructor Brian Shipman and several video students, plus university videographer Bobby Hearn, shot and edited the production.

“Vespers is such a revered tradition on our campus and throughout our community,” says Dr. James Davidson, director of choral studies and music education. “It’s our wish that this video will inspire the feelings of peace, hope, goodwill and love that so many look forward to each year.”
