Drury University recognizes the value of residential living to the total educational process, and therefore requires that all full-time day school students live on campus unless they meet specific exemption criteria.

The university will consider exemption requests from students who meet one or more of the criteria below:

  • Living at home with parent at primary family residence within 30 miles of Drury
  • Age 21 or older at the start of the academic year (cannot be applied to break contract mid-year)
  • Married
  • Have a child
  • Medical condition that cannot reasonably be accommodated in student housing
  • Extenuating circumstances – a situation that would prevent you from attending Drury if you had to live on campus
  • Veteran or currently serving in the United States military

Students who do not receive email permission to be exempt from the housing policy will be required to fill out a housing contract; an on-campus bed and meal plan will be assigned. Do not commit to an off-campus lease until you receive official release from the Housing office. Current students will not be able to register unless the Housing office has an approved exemption form or a current housing contract on file.

Please read directions, print & notarize the address verification if under 21 and commuting from home within 30 miles of campus. Have all documents ready to upload before submitting the exemption request.

 

The Housing Exemption Process

The Housing Exemption Committee meets every two weeks to evaluate exemption requests. Students will generally hear a decision in 1-2 weeks after submission of the exemption request. Students who are denied exemption can submit a second request with additional information to the committee for a 2nd review. If a student is denied, they will be expected to live on campus with the full cost of room and board.

If a student is approved, the contract is cancelled for the requested academic year.  Any full-time day school student will need to file a new exemption each year. Cancellation fees may apply.

Deadlines and Contract Cancellation Fees

Returning students who hope to be exempt from the housing policy must submit their form and any additional paperwork to the Housing office by April 1.

New students who hope to be exempt from the housing policy must submit their exemption form and any additional paperwork by July 31st for Fall and December 1 for Spring.

  • If a Request for Exemption is received on or before the exemption deadline there is NO contract cancellation fee.
  • If a Request for Exemption is received after the exemption deadline, but prior to fall move-in, the student will be charged a $500 contract cancellation fee.
  • If a Request for Exemption is received on or after fall move-in and by the add-course deadline, the student will be charged:
    • $500 contract cancellation fee
    • the nightly room rate until date of formal check-out
    • the prorated cost of the fall meal plan
  • If a Request for Exemption is received after the fall add-course deadline, the student will be charged:
    • $500 contract cancellation fee
    • the nightly room rate until date of formal check-out
    • the entire cost of the current semester’s meal plan, unless cancellation/move-out occur during Winter Break or between Jan move-in and the Jan meal change deadline (in which case the spring meal plan would be prorated)
    • 40% of the remaining room rent for the entire academic year
