Applying for a Substitute Certificate

• Candidates must be issued a substitute teaching certificate prior to applying for student teaching.
• Candidates must have at least 60 credit hours, and must be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check in order to qualify.

Registering for Fingerprints

• Candidates must complete fingerprints and a criminal background check as part of their substitute teaching certificate.
• The background check completed as part of Teacher Education admission is not able to be transferred; you must complete a new one, as DESE must have updated information.
• Use code “2301” when you register, so that your fingerprints are sent to the appropriate place.

Ordering Transcripts

• Candidates must send official paper copies of transcripts from all institutions where they received college credit to DESE.
