Ioana Popescu, Ph.D.

Professor of Biology

Ioana received her B.S. and M.S. in Biology at the University of Bucharest in Bucharest, Romania.  She arrived to the United States in Cincinnati, OH, where she pursued doctoral studies in the area of plant population genetics.  After receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati, Ioana held two visiting positions at: Whitworth College in Spokane WA (1999-2000), and Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL (2000-2001).  At Drury, Ioana teaches a variety of botany classes: Diversity of Plants and Algae, Field and Systematic Botany, Medical Botany, as well as other general biology classes: Exploring Molecular Biology, Evolution, Biodiversity, and general education classes: Global Foundations: Plants and People, Science Goes Global.  

Ioana’s current scholarship areas include: developing a photographic field guide of wildflowers of Romania, updating, improving and eventually (with student and colleagues help) producing an interactive digital tree map of Drury University campus, organizing and transferring on acid free paper the herbarium collection, medicinal plant uses, increasing the public and pre-university education appreciation and understanding of plants, and importance of plants to human life, etc.
